Cheap bags for brewing

Grain bags that are bespoke for BIAB applications cost upwards of $10 at many places. With a little ingenuity however, perfectly good substitutes can be had for much less. For those who are good with your needlework (or more likely, have a very supportive other half who's good at that), you can simply purchase voile material by the foot and get one custom-made for barely any cost at all. Unfortunately, neither of us are great with sewing, but here's a nice tip!

My friends John and Eric pointed me to these lovely Japanese laundry bags. They're sold at $2 or less, and work perfectly for BIAB! Although they look kind of flimsy, they definitely are not - my last one serviced my brewing needs for more than 10 sessions before I decided to replace it. You can get them at hardware stores, general provision stores, and Daiso.

Fresh from the pack, there's a synthetic smell however, so I'd highly recommend a detergent soak and a hot water soak before use. Unzip it, fit it over your mash tun, and you're good to go! Eric uses it zipped and dunks the bag into the mash, but I prefer to leave it open so I can recirculate water through it and stir the grain as well.
